After that the plant needs to be given some time to grow and regenerate for next year.

Asparagus is a very fussy vegetable, starting with root stock, it takes two years of growing before you can pick at all, and then for the next couple of years, you need to pick fairly lightly so as not to damage the plant.

Then, in dry weather, it needs water, and in the summer it gets Asparagus Beetle (a red-backed beetle), that it and its larvae need picking off.

So, with all of this, we don't get that many portions given the size of the plot that it takes up and the cost of the route stock in the first place. I can understand why it costs so much in the supermarket.

A few portions a year are great for us.

Spring is here

After a long and dark winter, this weekend G and I finally got back down to the allotment. We hadn't done much work done here over the winter (apart from fix the broken window from where the youths broke it). All in all, the place wasn't in too bad a shape. After a couple of hours, we had dug over two beds, dug in some compost and planted the first early potatoes and first batch of summer beans.

Yesterday, I was working from home, and popped down after finishing work, and cleared most of the raised bed and planted some salad crops there.

Our back garden now also contains the pop-up greenhouse, which will be out until the summer, which has broad beans, peas and cauliflowers growing (hopefully) in it.

And on the windowsill, we have chili and tomatoes.

Grow your own and save £26 a week

I've just completed a project where I received daily press clippings about the retail industry. One day, I received the following:

Grow your own and save £26 a week
Research carried out by the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners has estimated that allotment holders save almost £1,400 a year by growing their own fruit and vegetables. Amateur gardeners grow 1,642lb of produce a year, which could be sold for £1,564. On average they spend £202 renting their plot and sowing crops, giving a profit or saving of £1,362. This equates to a saving of about £26 from an average family's weekly supermarket shopping bill.
The Daily Telegraph, Date: 20/01/2011, Page: 5 Daily Express, Page: 30(14629035) Metro London, Page: 27(14631978) The Sun, Page: 36(14629566)

This straight away made me think whether we match up to this.

The easiest sums to do are the costs - rent £18, Alton Allotment Association membership £4, seed order £7.80, potatoes £6, IOW garlic £2?, onions tbc. So I estimate total costs, including some further miscellaneous to be about £50 each year.

Savings that we make, well over the summer, we're pretty self sufficient in veg, and don't need to buy any puddings because of the soft fruit (although will buy ice cream, and ingredients to make crumble topping etc). We do still need to buy apples, oranges, grapes and the like for our lunch boxes.

So I guess it is to calculate what we don't spend at the supermarket. Looking at Sainsbury's website, from what we grow, to replace even one of each costs £45, not even taking into account that we try to be good at freezing things/storing. I would guesstimate that food wise there are a good 15 weeks of the year where we supplement very little, this would give at least £750 saved pounds. However, to be honest, growing your own definitely determines what you eat - I'm pretty sure we would not each so much courgette if we didn't grow it!!!!

We also give quite a lot away, particularly rhubarb and runner beans. Sainsburys regularly sell 3 sticks of rhubarb for £1.99, we reckon that we give away probably 30-40 sticks a year - that's worth up to £80, although we generally only receive a cup of tea or something stronger in return! I'm not sure that there is a direct displacement either, although we may all be a few pounds lighter.

So, do I agree with the sums - well no, for two reasons: we're not allowed to sell all our produce, and I doubt farmers receive the amount that the supermarkets sell for, and no way would we add £26 every week to our shopping bill, we'd be bankrupt!

Pumpkin soup

This year was our best pumkin year ever, and so we have had to put our thinking hats on to make sure we use them in new and innovative ways.

This year, I've been making some soups, and so wanted to make Pumpkin Soup. And so, as I grow my own, each year I make a big jar of pickled beetroot. Until now, I've never blogged about it, which is daft as I then check about 3 other sites for recipes and do a mash-up of these and my own style.

So, I grab a big pan-full of smallish beetroot, and boil for 45 mins - 1 hr.

During this time, steralise the jars you're going to store the beetroot in, by washing and drying in the oven.
When the beetroot are cooked, peel (this should be fairly easy as the skin will just come away with your fingers).

Whilst doing this, heat up your vinegar - I use the Sarsons pickling vinegar so that I don't have to worry about spices or any thing.

Slice the beetroot adn add to the jar. Pour over the hot vinegar and put the top on the jar.
Be careful - you'll stain yourself!!!

Slow-cooked courgettes on toast

So today is a day for me to try cooking new things with the veg. We had excess courgette, as I forgot to give my mum any when she visited yesterday. So, on the recommendation, I tried the Slow-Cooked Courgette on Toast recipe by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, as per the Guardian website.

So this is very easy, and yes, it does get much sweeter as it cooks down, but probably won't be repeated, too sickly for us . That's because we don't necessarily push our boundaries that often, so what we cook seems obvious to us.

This week, we had quite a lot of beetroot (I picked a load to take to the Alton Allotment Association Show). So decided to make something exciting with them.

I've got the Sarah Raven's Garden Kitchen book, and picked the Roast Beetroot Soup recipe, which I have then amended to fit my own preferences. You might find the book a good (and better) starting place.

So what I cooked is:
Makes about 6 portions

Ingredients
2 large beetroot, scrubbed and leaves off
A few Swiss chard and beetroot leaves, shredded
1.5 litres chicken stock
Dash of Olive Oil
4 shallots, finely chopped
2 carrots, chopped
3 small pototoes, chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
Seasoning
A small amount of plain yoghurt

Methodology

At 180 degrees C, roast the beetroot for 1 hour

Take the shredded chard/beetroot leaves and boil in 500ml of the stock for 5 mins.

In a frying pan, gently fry using the olive oil the shallots, chopped carrots, chopped potatoes and crushed garlic.

Add these to the stock pot, and add the rest of the stock. Simmer for 8 minutes.

Rub the skin off the beetroot and chop up.

Put in a blender together with a small amount of the stock mixture. As you blend, gradually add the rest of the stock mixture. I did this in two batches.

Run the soup through a sieve.

Serve hot with a swirl of plain yoghurt.

Show-Time!

Tuesday 31st August 2010 was the 2010 Alton Allotment Association annual show. You may remember last year, the first time I entered, my cabbage came 3rd :)

This year, thought I would try again, but not hopeful as I didn't even have a cabbage to enter! So over the couple of days before the show, I was to be seen picking, cleaning and leaving veg as appropriate, so that I could take it to enter. Here is the produce, ready to go to the show!
During the judging of the show by the Mayor of Alton, we had a quiz. My team 'Lost the Plot' came 2nd (31 1/2 ponts, the team that came first had 32). So I won a small prize for that :D

So after this, it was to go and see the results of the judging, would I have any placements? I already knew I wouldn't win the Longest Runner Bean or Biggest Potato categories, but perhaps something else might get place? Well it did, my courgettes are the 2nd best in Alton :D

Who knows what will happen next year?

Harvest variations

More Pictures

One of the best things about having an allotment is harvesting the fruit and vegatables, the product of the hard work, which starts much earlier in the year, and is sometimes wet and cold.

I have noticed though, despite trying to get a reasonable amount to feed me and G throughout much of the year, it is hard to get the amounts right. One year it may be too much so you grow less the next year, only then to suffer a poor harvest on that. So I thought I would note what has grown well this year and what hasn't. Weather wise it has been an odd year - a very harsh winter, a blazing hot June (duing the World Cup), and then July and August being ok, sometimes storms, sometimes sunny, but never really baking.

What has grown well
Courgettes
Squash
Broadbeans
Peas (although some failed that were shaded by the spinach)
Lettuce (finally might have cracked this)
Carrots (after an initial failure)
Leeks
Rasberries

What hasn't grown well
Onions (very small)
Brassicas (not going to be a good cabbage year, cauliflowers failed at the seed level and calabrese and swede aren't doing much either)
Rocket (moth eaten)
Green Beans (already seem to be finished)
Runner Beans (haven't picked any where as near as many as last year)

So the reasons for this? For the failures, perhaps they didn't get on with the weather - the onions I would put in this category). Perhaps not liking the bit of soil they are in - again, the onions are in the clay section of the plot so maybe another factor for them. I didn't manure this year to give the ground a rest so that it doesn't get over fertilised - this is what others do so I'm just following them. Change of type of plant - using a different variety might impact on produce as well.

Will probably never know, and is probably a combination of lots of these factors, will just have to try again next year.

Pickings from today - runner beans, courgette and tomatoes

Aspargus

More Pictures

This is our first pick of asparagus!!!!

It's been growing on our plot for two years. I have just harvested a large bowl full this evening and put some aside for eating but there are just too many. Not wanting to waste such a lovely crop I set about making some more jam with the other 1½kg.

Beth's made a runny strawberry jam before from Sarah Raven's cook book but I prefer something a little more set. Drawing on my apple and blackberry jam making earlier this year I've set about (pun intended) making something by combining that recipe with Sarah's. I've just finished so the jury is still out on the results, perhaps an update or comment to this post at a later date will be in order.

Just so I remember what on earth I did...

Ingredients:

1½kg freshly picked strawberries, halved.

1kg high pectin sugar (I use Silverspoon Jam Sugar with Added Pectin).

Method:
Put the strawberries in a pan and heat gently while stirring. When they are coming to the boil add the sugar and stir continuously until the sugar has dissolved. Mash the mixture with a potato masher (or put in a blender if you want it really fine) to smooth it out to your desired texture. Turn the heat up and bring to the boil, continue to boil and stir until the setting point is reached. Setting point should be around 105 degrees celsius, test on a cool plate. I boiled for around 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, wash some jars and lids. Sterilise them by placing on a tray, then put into the oven on 160 degrees celsius. Once the oven has reached temperature turn it off and leave the jars in the oven until you need them.

Allow the mix to cool a little before transferring to the sterile jars. Add wax discs (wax side up) and put the lids on.

Job done. I was very tempted to join them, but I needed to get on with other things, so just dumped our latest load of veg peelings from the house and picked some swede for dinner that night and grabbed my box of seed.

We awoke on Monday (2nd Feb) to snow. Was somewhat glad that I hadn't spent time on Saturday digging.

This picture was taken on Thursday, we'd had a little more snow on Tuesday, during Wed/Thurs night, and can report when I'm blogging this on Friday afternoon, it's snowing again.

So what to do when the snow is on the ground - I've been planning - sorted out a rough planting schedule and also the lay out for this coming year.

Will start planting seeds in the next couple of weeks at home, and look to get things into the ground in March.

Tagliatelle Carbonara

I cooked a Taliatelle Carbonara over the weekend as we were entertaining some friends. Here's the recipe and my thoughts on making a good Carbonara.

Ingredients (serves 2):

Home Made Fresh Tagliatelle (a recipe for another day)

1 small pot single cream (I think they're around 300ml from memory)

A handful of Italian hard cheese, grated (Parmesan or similar)

4 rashers smoked back bacon, fat removed and diced

1 egg

Ground black pepper

Herbage (I used Tarragon or Basil, depending on what I have/like at the time)

It's worth remembering Carbonara is a creamy sauce not a cheesy sauce so use enough cheese to give a good flavour but not overpower the whole dish. This would very much depend on the cheese you get and particularly if you switch away from Italian cheese. I like to use single cream where most Carbonara recipes used double, for me I prefer the reduced fat content and find that double cream can make the sauce too thick. The last thing to say about the ingredients is about the Bacon, use the best quality you can get. I prefer to go for the added flavour of a smoked variety from my butcher but you could equally use green bacon, if you go with cheaper cuts from the supermarket you may need to add more (their rashers are much smaller). Again, I use back bacon to help with overall fat content and remove most of the fat before cooking.

Method:
If you're using dried pasta you might want to start that off first. For home made, make the Tagliatelle before you start.

Make the carbonara sauce before you start to cook. Put the egg into a bowl and whisk lightly just to mix. Add the cream to the egg and stir together. Add lots of black pepper and the cheese, and have a final stir to complete the sauce.

Heat some oil in a pan and fry the bacon, you can cook longer for crispier bacon or shorter as you prefer. Add your herbage at some point while cooking the bacon as you prefer. Most recipes will have you add the bacon to the Carbonara sauce and use the heat of the cooked pasta to heat the sauce and cook the egg. Personally, I prefer to remove the bacon pan from the heat and add the carbonara to the bacon in the pan, this should better ensure the egg gets cooked and results in a hotter meal...

If you're working with fresh pasta, start that off about now. Remove the bacon from the heat and allow to cool slightly before adding the Carbonara sauce to the pan. Return on a very low heat to warm the sauce, this should help the egg thicken the single cream too. Be careful not to boil the mix, if you do boil you risk the sauce being way too thick and possibly lumpy. It's better to leave the sauce slightly less thick than you would ideally want as it will thicken even more when it hits the hot pasta!

Meanwhile your pasta should have been cooking, so drain it and return to the pan it was cooked in. Pour half the Carbonara onto the pasta and stir. Serve the pasta mix into your pasta bowls. Pour the remaining Carbonara over the top. You can garnish with more black pepper, grated cheese or herbage as you like.

Serve with a dressed green salad and/or garlic bread. Ok, so actually we forgot to get the camera out after I'd cooked and concentrated on filling our faces instead.

We have been getting quite a few squash from the allotment recently and my usual response to is to throw them in a veggie risotto. Bored with that idea, I decided to come up with something entirely new and did a bit of a make it up as you go along thing to get there. Here's the idea...

Ingredients:

1 Squash (from the allotment)

A couple of handfuls of Spinach (from the allotment)

A handful of grated parmesan (our is local from West Sussex)

A couple of knobs of butter

Garlic (from the allotment)

A home made sheet of fresh pasta

Large tin of chopped tomatoes

Red wine vinegar

Fresh basil

Salt and pepper

Method:
As if you're making mashed potato, boil the squash for 15 minutes or so in water.

Make a tomato sauce by heating the chopped tomatoes with chopped basil stirred in. Add salt, pepper and a dash of red wine vinegar to taste. Reduce this mixture down until you have a rich tomato sauce.

In the mean time, heat some oil and melt a knob of butter in a frying pan. Add the garlic to the pan and start to cook. Wilt the spinach in the pan. When done, chop the spinach.

Mash the squash with a knob of butter, adding salt+pepper to taste. Whip in the parmesan while still hot then stir in the spinach. This forms the filling for the cannelloni.

Roll out your pasta sheet (or use fresh lasagne sheets if you can get them, or even dried ready made cannelloni if you must). Place a good line of the filling across the width of the pasta sheet, say a heaped desert spoonful, depending on how wide the pasta is. Roll the end around the filling so you end up with cannelloni the size of a decent sausage. Cut that one off the sheet and repeat until you've run out of filling (or pasta).

Pour a little of the tomato mixture into a lasagne type dish. Then add all of the cannelloni tubes on top. Pour over the remaining tomato mixture. You can now add anything else you want to the topping, such as more basil, cheese, or maybe use a mix of white and tomato sauce. When assembled, put into the oven on about 200c, gas mark 5, for around 15-20 minutes.

When done, serve with garlic bread and or a simple green salad. Lovely!
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4400179462785731123-3449648534288525772?l=seed2plate.blogspot.com' alt='' Am well chuffed at growing garlic - a first for me. Ignore that Skate said it is dead easy.

It was quite simple really I guess, break up a clover of garlic (these are from the Isle of Wight Garlic Company), and then plant, each clove about 6 inches apart. Did this in September, then wait until Mid Summer's day and harvest.

I liked the fact that they were due to be picked on mid-summer's day - reminds that you are reliant on nature for these things.

the first onion of the year

More Pictures

our first onion of the year.

the plot is beginning to start producing sensible amounts of produce. Have also picked the last of this year's rhubarb, but have to admit that we froze that rather than ate it.

B

New Brassica Netting

More Pictures

After my recent pictures showing our cabbages looking rather sorry for themselves, this is my solution to the problem. We've had our seed potatoes for around a month or so now I guess and they're starting to shoot very nicely.

They're destined for our potato plot we spent so much time on and worked so hard to create at the end of last year. I'm really pleased we put the effort in to get that bit finished off last year as I don't much fancy doing all that digging in the weather we've got at the moment. That said, I'm assured it's still going to be a lot of work to dig them in, and even more to dig them back out again when they're fully grown.

Hopefully, we'll get lots of lovely home grown potatoes to give us plenty of room to experiment with potato recipies. It's got me thinking already, there's so much stuff you can do with a spud, salads, chips/wedges, jackets, skins, stuffed, all sorts really. Suggestions welcome of course, but maybe nearer the time!

With thanks to Hanan's idea for her stir fry I made this tasty little number for dinner last night. The picture is only taken with my camera phone though.

I modified Hanan's cooking method (to reduce washing up, I'm lazy like that) and guessed at the quantity of ingredients since no measures were given in the original recipe. However, I quite like that, you can make it to your own taste so take my measures below with a pinch of salt.

Ingredients: (serves 2)
Diced Chicken
2 Sliced Leeks
1 Chopped Red pepper
2 slices of White Cabbage
2 cloves of garlic, chopped
Mixed herbs, salt+pepper to taste
1 tbsp ish Dark soy sauce
Small handful of Pine nuts
Around 6-8 oz rice

Method:
Heat some olive oil in a large pan. Add the garlic, leek and red pepper, frying for a minute or two to soften. Add in the chicken, cabbage, herbs, salt and pepper and fry until the chicken is cooked through. Just before the chicken is thoroughly cooked add the soy sauce and pine nuts.

Serve with boiled basmati rice and enjoy!

Christmas Dinner

More Pictures

So it's been a while since either of us have posted anything for which there are many reasons. Mainly, we've just moved house and have been really quite busy with that rather than growing and cooking stuff. But also, it's winter season and there isn't a great deal going on, or to be done, at the allotment at this time of year.

This isn't exactly the finished article of Christmas dinner by a long shot, but I wanted to show off the first sweed we picked. In the confusion surrounding dishing up, and hoards of hungry people hanging around I didn't get time to photograph the finished meal anyway. We grew the carrots too, but the sweed was very nice!

Spuds....?

More Pictures
I don't think it looks much in the picture, but this is a whole weekends work. We've not taken too many pictures of this area before as it's just been used to park our bikes, but here's one from a couple of weeks ago to compare with. There's a little more work to do to finish it off, mostly involving spreading something rather unpleasant across it.

Next spring, this should become our potato plot for next year. It's quite a large plot so we should get lots of crops in here. This is why I think it doesn't look much in the picture by the way, it looks much smaller than it is, not sure why, maybe it's my shadow? Bear in mind, the side of the shed you can see is 7' long so this bed is easily twice that.

We've both been sleeping very well, we've put a huge amount of physical effort into digging out all the couch grass. There's another reason as well though, there's a great amount of satisfaction to be had from finishing off the majority of our digging work. We have a little more to do on the brassica bed, but I think we're both quietly pleased that next years weeding shouldn't be as back-breaking as this years digging.

Beef stew (& homemade bread)

More Pictures
So started with the following produce from the allotment:

Carrot, Turnip, Onion

Added some stewing beef (400g), 4 spuds, 1/3 bottle of red wine, 1/2 pint vegetable stock, some garlic, sage and rosemary. You can see the marked difference between where we started at the beginning of May, and this picture taken half way through October.

Everyone where I work is probably fed up of hearing me go on about how much digging we've done this summer. It almost seems like every weekend we've been out there doing some heavy graft. But, in reality, it's not been like that at all. We took the decision to only partly manage our plot for the summer, so we could reap the benefit of some crops in our first year. Only now is the site starting to take shape as a whole as we look forward towards next season and even more great produce.

I really like looking back through Beth's pictures, but rather than retrospectively blog all of these I'll stop here with the before/after type arrangement and continue on from now. I'm not sure how exciting the pictures will be over the next few months though, as we head into our first winter at the allotment. Here's looking forward to some great veg, and tasty recipies next year!

G & the butternut squash

More Pictures

Graham with our sole butternut squash

In the beginning

More Pictures

While we're only starting out with the blog now, we've been working at our allotment since May 2007. Beth has been taking pictures on her camera phone ever since then so we can see the progress we've made along the way.

This shot, and others Beth took back in the early days show exactly how bad our plot was when we took it over. I'm amazed looking back at this picture just how far we've come in a short space of time. As you can see, we inherited nothing but a load of long grass, and couch grass at that - which is the stuff with really long string-like roots.

Spinach and Ricotta Canelloni

More Pictures

This is a bit of an experiment, inspired in the most part by Hanan. I'm thinking of starting a blog about our allotment and what we do with the produce, so last night I took pictures of our meal as I was preparing it.

I started off by visiting our plot to pick some spinach leaves, we have a great variety that allows us to continue picking it as it grows, so we can go for the younger tastier leaves! The spinach was heading for the dinner plate in the form of canelloni, much as follows...

Ingredients (serves 2):
1 egg
100g pasta flour (type OO if you can get it)
A good pan full of washed spinach (say a 300g bag if you buy it)
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tub creamy ricotta cheese
freshly grated parmesan
chilli or chilli powder
1 large tin plum tomatoes
herbs (I recommend basil)
salt+pepper

To Cook:
Pre-heat your oven to Gas Mark 6 (200 C).

Make some pasta (or buy canelloni tubes) with the flour and egg. Place the flour in a bowl, make a well in the middle, beat the egg, then fold into the flour. When the mix starts to come together, knead it until it forms a silky smooth ball. Wrap in some cling film and place in the fridge for at least 20-30 minutes to cool. Roll the ball into a sheet using your pasta machine.

Make a rich tomato sauce to dress the canelloni tubes. Chop the tomatoes and place in a small pan with some chopped herbs and salt+pepper to taste, you could add a chilli to give it a kick if you want. Put the pan onto heat, reduing the mix down slowly to form a rich, intense tomato sauce.

While the sauce is reducing, heat a little olive oil in a large pan, add the garlic and some chilli to taste (you could use a chilli oil instead). When the garlic has softened add a handful of the spinach and allow to wilt, continue adding more spinach until you have wilted it all down, mixing with the garlic and chilli oil as you go. Take off the heat, and allow to cool a little.

Chop the spinach and place in a bowl. Stir in the ricotta cheese to form the filling of your canelloni. If you have dried tubes, stuff these with the mix (you can use a pipe bag, or just fingers and spoon). If you have a fresh sheet of pasta, place a line of the mix across the sheet and roll into a tube. Continue stuffing tubes, or rolling until your mix is exhausted.

In a tight fitting oven proof dish, pour a little of the tomato mix on the base. Place the canelloni tubes on the top, then cover with the remaining tomato mix. Sprinkle the grated parmesan on top and place in the oven for 20 minutes.

Serve with a crunchy green side salad or some garlic bread on the side.
